Passione Engadina 2026 Italian Classics in the Alps · 15th Edition 27–30 August 2026

Passione Engadina is one of those events that fits the Engadin perfectly — Italian passion, alpine precision, and the kind of unhurried elegance that St. Moritz has always understood. The 2026 edition marked the 15th anniversary of the gathering, carrying the theme The Italian Job — a tribute to the many brands that, through their history and style, have built the legend of the Italian automobile.

The Event

The format is exclusive by design: 120 carefully selected cars divided into three categories — classics built up to 1986, younger classics and youngtimers up to 2006, and modern cars chosen at the organiser’s discretion. Alongside the main field, the Ladies' Cup and the Next Gen Cup for drivers under 25 add further dimension to an event that is as much about community as it is about machinery.

This is not a concours and not a race. It is a regularity tour — two days of driving through some of Switzerland’s most spectacular scenery, with a route from Silvaplana through Chiavenna and back to St. Moritz, punctuated by five Average Speed Trials.

On the Road

I photographed the cars on 28 August along the route toward Maloja, by the shore of Lake Silvaplana. The weather was grey and wet — overcast skies, damp asphalt, rain on the windscreens. For photography it was ideal. The muted light removed every distraction and left only the forms and colours of the machines themselves. Decades of Italian automotive history moving through an alpine landscape in real weather, on real roads — exactly what this event is designed for.

The Setting

On 29 August the cars drove directly on the runway at Samedan Airport — one of the more unusual stages an Italian classic can find itself on. The static exhibition was held in the centre of St. Moritz, at Kulm Hotel and Kempinski — two addresses entirely in keeping with the occasion.

Why It Matters

The Engadin provides a backdrop that few events in Europe can match: alpine passes, stone walls, lake shores, and the particular quality of late-summer light in the Upper Engadin. For a photographer it offers something that polished static shows do not — motion, weather, and the authentic character of each car revealed under actual driving conditions. An event worth returning to.

Die Passione Engadina ist eines jener Ereignisse, das perfekt ins Engadin passt — italienische Leidenschaft, alpine Präzision und jene entspannte Eleganz, die St. Moritz seit jeher verkörpert. Die Ausgabe 2026 markierte das 15-jährige Jubiläum der Veranstaltung und stand unter dem Thema The Italian Job — eine Hommage an die vielen Marken, die durch ihre Geschichte und ihren Stil die Legende des italienischen Automobils aufgebaut haben.

Die Veranstaltung

Das Format ist bewusst exklusiv gehalten: 120 sorgfältig ausgewählte Fahrzeuge in drei Kategorien — Klassiker bis 1986, jüngere Klassiker und Youngtimer bis 2006 sowie moderne Fahrzeuge nach Wahl der Organisatoren. Der Ladies' Cup und der Next Gen Cup für Fahrer unter 25 Jahren verleihen einer Veranstaltung zusätzliche Tiefe, bei der die Gemeinschaft ebenso im Mittelpunkt steht wie die Fahrzeuge selbst.

Dies ist weder ein Concours noch ein Rennen. Es ist eine Regularitätsausfahrt — zwei Fahrtage durch einige der spektakulärsten Landschaften der Schweiz, mit einer Route von Silvaplana über Chiavenna zurück nach St. Moritz und fünf Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeitsprüfungen.

Auf der Strecke

Ich fotografierte die Fahrzeuge am 28. August entlang der Route Richtung Maloja, am Ufer des Silvaplanersees. Das Wetter war grau und nass — bedeckter Himmel, feuchter Asphalt, Regen auf den Windschutzscheiben. Für die Fotografie war es ideal. Das gedämpfte Licht entfernte jede Ablenkung und liess nur die Formen und Farben der Fahrzeuge stehen. Jahrzehnte italienischer Automobilgeschichte in Bewegung durch eine alpine Landschaft — bei echtem Wetter, auf echten Strassen, genau so wie diese Veranstaltung gedacht ist.

Der Schauplatz

Am 29. August fuhren die Fahrzeuge direkt auf der Startbahn des Flugplatzes Samedan — einer der ungewöhnlicheren Etappen, die einem italienischen Klassiker geboten werden können. Die statische Ausstellung fand im Zentrum von St. Moritz statt, im Kulm Hotel und im Kempinski — zwei Adressen, die dem Anlass vollauf gerecht werden.

Warum es sich lohnt

Das Engadin bietet eine Kulisse, mit der nur wenige Veranstaltungen in Europa mithalten können: Alpenpässe, Steinmauern, Seeufer und das besondere Licht des Spätsommers im Oberengadin. Für einen Fotografen bietet das etwas, das polierte Statikshows nicht können — Bewegung, Wetter und den authentischen Charakter jedes Fahrzeugs unter echten Fahrbedingungen. Eine Veranstaltung, zu der man zurückkehrt.
