The Bernina Gran Turismo continues its tradition as one of the most exclusive classic hill climb events, returning to the Valposchiavo Pass in September 2026. The 5.7-kilometre course runs between La Rösa and Ospizio Bernina — a stage that rewards precision, commitment, and the particular kind of courage it takes to drive a historic machine hard on an open alpine road.
On the Pass
I was positioned across the full length of the Bernina Pass on 13 September — from the lower hairpins to the upper sections near the summit. The sound arrived before the cars. Exhaust notes off stone walls, engine roar carrying across open mountain terrain — the kind of acoustic experience that a static display cannot reproduce.
The field covered six decades of motorsport history. A Formula-style single-seater in period livery — open-wheel, exposed engine, no concessions to comfort. A silver open-top sports car from the 1950s, two crew in period helmets, running wide on the asphalt. A pack of touring cars from the 1970s moving together — BMW, Mustang, Volvo — in close formation through a mountain corner. And a moment that defined the day: an Audi Quattro rally car, deeply into a corner, kissing the rock face — haybales burning, the crew working to free the car and continue.
The concept is “Rough Luxury” — authenticity and precision together. The patina of a well-worn car, the passion for pushing a classic to its limits, and the crisp mountain air of the Upper Engadin. On the Bernina Pass in September, that is not a marketing phrase. It is what you see through the lens.
Why This Event
The Bernina Gran Turismo is limited to a maximum of 70 vehicles, selected by committee. It does not scale for mass attendance. The course is a public road, closed for the occasion, with spectators on foot at the hairpins. There is no barrier between the photographer and the machine — only distance, judgement, and a 600mm lens.
For a photographer building a motorsport portfolio in the Engadin, this event is not optional. It is the one that matters most.

Der Bernina Gran Turismo setzt seine Tradition als eines der exklusivsten klassischen Bergrennen fort und kehrt im September 2026 auf den Valposchiaviner Pass zurück. Die 5,7 Kilometer lange Strecke zwischen La Rösa und Ospizio Bernina ist eine Etappe, die Präzision, Engagement und jene besondere Art von Mut verlangt, die es braucht, um ein historisches Fahrzeug auf einer offenen Alpenstrasse hart zu fahren.
Auf dem Pass
Ich war am 13. September über die gesamte Länge des Berninapasses verteilt — von den unteren Kehren bis zu den oberen Abschnitten nahe des Gipfels. Der Klang kam vor den Autos. Auspuffknall von Steinmauern, Motorengeräusch über offenes Berggelände — ein akustisches Erlebnis, das eine statische Ausstellung nicht reproduzieren kann.
Das Teilnehmerfeld umspannte sechs Jahrzehnte Motorsportgeschichte. Ein Formelrennwagen in historischer Lackierung — offen, exponierter Motor, keine Zugeständnisse an den Komfort. Ein silberner offener Sportwagen aus den 1950er Jahren, zwei Insassen in Periodenhelmen, breit auf dem Asphalt fahrend. Eine Gruppe Tourenwagen aus den 1970ern — BMW, Mustang, Volvo — in enger Formation durch eine Bergkurve. Und ein Moment, der den Tag prägte: ein Audi Quattro Rallyefahrzeug, tief in einer Kurve, die Felswand streifend — Heuballen brennend, die Crew arbeitend, das Auto zu befreien und weiterzufahren.
Das Konzept ist “Rough Luxury” — Authentizität und Präzision zusammen. Die Patina eines abgenutzten Autos, die Leidenschaft, einen Klassiker an seine Grenzen zu bringen, und die frische Bergluft des Oberengadins. Auf dem Berninapass im September ist das keine Marketingphrase. Es ist das, was man durch das Objektiv sieht.
Warum dieses Event
Der Bernina Gran Turismo ist auf maximal 70 Fahrzeuge begrenzt, ausgewählt durch ein Komitee. Er skaliert nicht für Massenbesucher. Die Strecke ist eine öffentliche Strasse, für den Anlass gesperrt, mit Zuschauern zu Fuss an den Kehren. Es gibt keine Barriere zwischen dem Fotografen und der Maschine — nur Distanz, Urteilsvermögen und ein 600mm-Objektiv.
Für einen Fotografen, der im Engadin ein Motorsportportfolio aufbaut, ist dieses Event nicht optional. Es ist das, das am meisten zählt.
